Teleworking Success Requires Enterprise Buy-In
We think it's important to provide some perspective to the discussion about Marissa Mayer's decision to quash Yahoo's teleworking policy. It appears that telecommuting is alive and well, at least at other employers in the Silicon Valley, as evidenced by a Silicon Valley Business Journal Survey of Valley Companies.
There are some expected differences as to how these surveyed companies support working at home among their employees, such as frequency and which workers can participate. However, an interesting common thread is how many of these companies have no official policy to guide the practice of teleworking, and instead, leave it to the managers and employees to determine what works best for their organization and type of work. It's also clear that many of the surveyed companies don't do any formal tracking of how many employees are working remotely at any given time at the enterprise level, and instead rely on the managers involved to do their jobs within their organizations.
Pushing decision making downwards within the organization is also an approach shared by companies who have been able to successfully utilize collaborative productivity tools like video conferencing, as we wrote about in the May article.
That isn't to say that enabling individual managers with the discretion to enable teleworkers doesn't require enterprise level buy-in to be successful. On that point, a WorkSpanTV video interview Kate Lister, from Global Workplace Analytics, is worth-while viewing.
