Earth Day April 22, 2013

Earth Day is an annual event that has been observed on April 22 every year since 1970 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Don't worry, that isn't a setup to preach about the importance of doing your individual part in observance of Earth Day, although there's nothing wrong with that.

Earth Day is one of those events that most of us have heard about, but find easy to forget until someone or something brings it to our attention again. Let's face it — every day we all have to prioritize the competing demands for our attention and energy. And lately, there certainly hasn't been a lack of important challenges and issues confronting every person and every business.

What we find compelling about observing Earth Day this year is that the world-wide commitment to Green Policies and the pursuit of sustainable energy, food and water has continued to grow steadily since the first Earth Day in 1970. Much of that growth is now driven through mainstream, market-driven businesses, not just initiatives undertaken by non-profit organizations and individuals.

The Recycling Materials industry accounted for 115,000 jobs in the US in 2011, adding 12,000 new jobs from the previous year. According to The Bureau of International Recycling, the global recycling sector employs more than 1.5 million people in the processing of millions of tons of commodities, with industry revenue topping in excess of $200 billion every year.

It appears that hybrid and electric autos are here to stay, along with wind, solar, and fuel cell energy technologies. Advancements in business process automation and business communication technologies that include Two Rivers Conferencing Online Meeting Manager continue to roll out at a rapid pace, driving increasing work efficiencies, reducing energy use, and increasing profits. Two Rivers Conferencing takes pride in helping all of our customers become greener by using our audio, web and video conferencing services.

Of course, many challenges with protecting the environment still exist, but there has been progress since that first Earth Day event in 1970, so Happy Earth Day!
